June is right around the corner and with it will come some of the best fly fishing of the season in Montana. Looking into the upcoming month, dry flies are sure to be on the menu on all of our area rivers. PMDs, Caddis, and the granddaddy of them all: the Salmonfly, will all be hatching by mid-month. June is probably the best time of the year to target trophy trout with dry flies as the big fish take chances and get sloppy with all of the food around.

The Summer fly fishing season is almost here and our Bozeman, Montana fly fishing guides are ready for it. June means longer days, great hatches, consistent fishing, flip-flop weather, and is one of our anglers favorite times for a Montana fly fishing trip. June 2018 is shaping up to be a great kick-off to our summer season. Spring was generous to us this year with mild weather and some of the better fly fishing in recent history for March, April, and May. June looks to continue this trend.

What happened to Fall? Seems like Winter arrived early in Bozeman, Montana this year. The snow is already starting to stack up in the mountains, skies are getting grey, and the forecast is calling for high temperatures in the mid 30’s to low 40’s. The warming huts on DePuy’s Spring Creek are fired up daily. Just about perfect for November fly fishing. I’ve heard it said before that there is nothing worse than a sunny day in November and April for fly fishing. Sure it may be comfortable, but bright skies will often mean little or no hatches and poor streamer fishing. We’ll take the cold and grey any day.

What does the Magic 8 ball have to say about September fly fishing in Bozeman, Montana? Lets give it a shake and see. We will start off with three predictions:

The hopper bite will continue through the end of the month
Crowds will thin out after Labor Day weekend
The Lower Madison will be tube free and fishable again

Please excuse our tardiness. The fish have been keeping us busy. Very busy. October has started off strong and looks to only get stronger. Fly fishing has been solid all around the Bozeman area. Cooler weather has started to set in and we’ve already seen some snowy days on the river. The crowds of summer are a distant memory, and even the more popular floats on our local rivers have been quiet. Just you, the trout, and maybe a bugling elk or two. There’s lots of water still pushing through our rivers for this time of year. No shortage of options for our anglers.

Better late than never! August has started off strong for our anglers and Montana fly fishing guides. We’ve seen cooler temps, some precipitation, and overcast skies, which has meant lots of great days on the water. Looking forward for the rest of the month we expect a few waves of heat to hit us but are expecting things to start cooling off as we move through August, water temps to drop slightly, and the bite to only get better.

The 2018 Montana fly fishing season has been treating our anglers and Bozeman, Montana fly fishing guides well so far and my magic 8 ball says July looks to continue the trend. The Yellowstone River, Madison River, and other local rivers are all on the drop and rapidly coming into form while the Missouri River has continued to spoil our anglers on a daily basis. Our forecast for July? Lots of cold water, trout rising for dryflies, and more happy anglers.
