Educational Trips & Lessons

The Montana Angling Company is more than just a guide service. We are also dedicated fly fishing educators who enjoy sharing our knowledge of rivers, fish, bugs, boats, and gear with the fly fishing community. We offer fly casting lessons for both single-handed and two-handed (spey) rods. We offer educational guided fly fishing experiences with a variety of emphases:

Entomology: Learn how to identify bugs, hatches, and what the trout are feeding on.
Rowing: Learn how to safely navigate and fly fish rivers in a drift boat.
DIY Fly Fishing: Learn how to guide yourself. We teach you’re the fundamentals of reading water, fly selection, wade fishing tactics, and rigging.

Casting Lessons

Our casting lessons are $50/hour of instruction and include all equipment needed (fly rod, reel, line, waders, boots). Our educational guided fly fishing experiences follow the same pricing and structure as our regular guided fly fishing day trips. Visit our Youtube Channel for access to free educational fly fishing opportunities including fly tying lessons and demos.

Winter & Spring Trips

Fly fishing in Montana is a year-round pursuit for our Montana fly fishing guides. We feel that some of the best fishing of the year can be had outside the prime-time summer months if solitude is what you crave. We offer special Winter and Spring guide trip rates for those anglers wanting to take advantage of empty rivers, rising fish, and cooler days. November through February expect winter weather but solid fishing on nicer days. By March 15 spring starts to show up in Bozeman, MT and you can expect reliable fishing on many of our local waters including the Missouri River, the Yellowstone River, the Madison River, the Paradise Valley Spring Creeks, and the Big Horn River. There are many good reasons to fish in the Spring: quality fly fishing without the crowds in April, a break in between skiing days at Big Sky Ski Resort or Bridger Bowl, or just to tune-up before summer shows up. Whatever your reason, the Montana Angling Company has a Winter and Spring Montana guided fly fishing trip for you.
